How Jonathan caused spread of Boko Haram – Osinbajo

The Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, has blamed failure of the immediate past government to provide equipment and supplies to the military for the spread of Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East He made the statement on Thursday at the graduation of Cadets of 63rd Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna. Mr. Osinbajo, who was the special guest at the graduation, said that the failure resulted to the death of over 20, 000 people with over two million displaced and more than 75, 000 children orphaned. He expressed regret that several billions of dollars meant for procurement of arms and ammunition to prosecute the war were cornered by few persons. “This has left the region with one of the worst humanitarian crisis,” he added. President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed to the Nigerian media to work with his administration in fighting corruption and improving the country’s economy. Mr. Buhari stated this in his speech on Thursday at the annual awards by the Leadership Newspapers. “I expect the Nigerian media to join our government in pursuit of these goals not just to criticize to prove their independence,” he said. SGF frustrating probe of billions spent on internally displaced persons – Reps

The House of Representatives committee investigating alleged diversion of funds and materials meant for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPS) said it was being frustrated by refusal of some persons to appear before it. The committee particularly decried the failure of Secretary to Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, to honour summon to him to appear and clarify some issues on the allegation. The Committee on IDPs and the North-East Initiatives, mandated by the house to investigate the allegation, had invited Mr. Lawal to explain how his office spent about N12 billion allocated for the IDPs’ challenges. The committee is also investigating the expenditure of N270 million by the Presidential Initiative on the North-East (PINE) “on just clearing of grass’’. Colombia’s President Juan Manual Santos has been awarded the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize. Mr. Santos was given the award for his efforts in ending the 50-year-old conflict between the Colombian government and FARC rebels. Mr. Santos was picked out of 360 nominees. The announcement was made by the chair of the selection committee, Kaci Kullman Five, in Norway. The Nobel committee also gave recognition to the people of Colombia.

Hundreds of African migrants, from Nigeria, Somalia, Eritrea and other sub-Saharan countries, crammed in boats headed for Italy, were rescued in multiple operations on Tuesday. More than two dozen people were dead in one boat alone, asphyxiated from the crush aboard. In other boats, bodies were splayed on the floorboards, forcing survivors to clamber over the corpses of their fellow voyagers.
