UK appoints Minister for Suicide Prevention and pledges £1.8 million to The Samaritans

UK Prime Minister, Theresa May has appointed the first ever Suicide Minister dedicated to reducing suicide across the country. The PM promoted junior health minister Jackie Doyle-Price and pledged £1.8million to fund The Samaritans helpline for four years. Mrs May said her appointee would lead a taskforce, introduce suicide prevention plans nationwide and work with victims’ families and charities. The world’s leading climate scientists have warned in  a new report that there is only 12 years for global warming to be kept to a maximum of 1.5C, beyond which even half a degree will significantly worsen the risks of drought, floods, extreme heat and poverty for hundreds of millions of people. If the world doesn’t act dramatically to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere, there will be catastrophic damages a dozen years from now. The authors of the landmark report by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released on Monday say urgent and unprecedented changes are needed to reach the target, which they say is affordable and feasible although it lies at the most ambitious end of the Paris agreement pledge to keep temperatures between 1.5C and 2C. Nigerian troops kill 76 Boko Haram terrorists (Photos)

  Seventy-six Boko Haram terrorists, among others, trying to overrun Nigeria’s military formation in Metele, near Kangarwa in Borno, have been killed. In what was a double blow to the terrorists, Chadian troops also killed another 48 terrorists on the same day. According to the Nigerian Army Twitter posts, the gallant troops of the 157 Battalion overwhelmed the terrorists, with superior firepower, as they attempted to attack Nigerian positions on 8 October. “The sustained superior firepower of the troops led to the neutralisation of 76 BHT. Unfortunately, the Nigerian Army lost seven soldiers while 16 were wounded in action. The Chief of army staff, Lt. General Buratai has commiserated with the families of the deceased and directed that the wounded be given adequate medical attention”. A husband recently caught his wife cuddling another man and stroking his hair on Google Street View so he divorced her. The man was trying to plan the best way to complete his journey to get a popular bridge when he spotted someone who looked familiar. The woman was sitting on a bench with a man's head in her lap while she stroked his hair. The husband realised the woman’s clothes were identical to those of his wife so he zoomed in on the image and realised it was in fact his wife. The photos were taken by a Google camera car in Lima, the capital of Peru in 2013. Despite the photo dating back to 2013, he angrily confronted his wife over her past infidelity. and she admitted to having an affair back then.  The couple later divorced as a result. The Federal Government has earlier presented N21, 700 per month as new minimum wage to the other social partners when the tripartite committee resumed sitting on Thursday, October 4th. Policeman accused of shooting colleague dead during Osun election; family seek justice (graphic photo)

A policeman has been accused of shooting dead a police sergeant in Osun state during the elections. The deceased, identified as Owai Owai a.k.a ‘Temple’. was among the police officers deployed to secure Osun governorship election last month. He was shot on the chest and his family members claim that witnesses told them he was shot by another officer identified as Theophilus Aghaulor with police number 410022 (Pictured above). Owai Owai who is from Adim Baise local government area in Cross River State, reportedly called his family member on that fateful day and promised to return home for a visit after the Osun election, but he was killed over a dispute that had to do with money. The family of the deceased have now taken to Facebook to ask for justice while claiming the officer who shot their brother is now on the run. A young  Nigerian lady who was said to have traveled to Saudi Arabia to work as a house help, has revealed how she escaped from her employer's home . The lady whose family taught travelled to work in Europe, had to escape to Oman after learning of  the sudden death of two Nigerian maids in Saudi Arabia. Read previous story here . In a recent interview with Satellite Times,  she revealed that her new boss allegedly killed the last maid (pictured above), who worked for her, weeks before she arrived. National Assembly to resume today amidst tension

  The Emir of  Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, has said that if proactive steps are not taken, Nigeria may still remain the poverty capital of the world for many years to come. The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said this after his induction as an honorary member of the Sigma Club of the University of Ibadan (UI) at the weekend.  He said that unless the country’s leaders get their priorities right and address critical issues that affect human development, many countries of the world would leave Nigeria behind.
