Gunmen shoot former UI vice-chancellor in failed kidnap attempt

Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Olufemi Bamiro was shot and wounded by gunmen in a failed kidnap attempt, on Tuesday, October 4th at Oluyole area of Ibadan. The spokesman of the Oyo Police Command, Adekunle Ajisebutu, who confirmed the incident said Mr. Bamiro was rescued by the prompt intervention of police officers from the Oluyole Division of the command in response to a distress call.  The former VC, who was shot on the right foot was taken to UCH where he is currently receiving treatment, according to a report by Premium Times. Mr. Ajisebutu also disclosed that the Police Commissioner, Sam Adegbuyi, has ordered the anti-kidnapping squad to go after the gunmen. A first class graduate and professor of Mechanical Engineering, Bamiro was the 10th vice chancellor of UI.

Senate blocked Tinubu’s bill seeking special status for Lagos

The Nigerian Senate has voted against a bill seeking special status and federal grant for Lagos State. The bill sponsored by Oluremi Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress Senator representing Lagos Central, was rejected on Wednesday after failing a voice vote called by Ike Ekweremadu. Consequently, the bill, SB 112, failed to scale second reading for committee stage. It sought one per cent of federally generated revenue as special grant for Lagos State in view of the former Nigeria capital’s socio-economic significance. The bill also seeks to compel the Federal Government to recognise Lagos as the country’s commercial capital. But the development did not go without uproar following comments by supporters and opponents of the bill. High-spending Nigerian senator, Dino Melaye, has acquired a 93-year-old Rolls Royce estimated at N180 million, amid a national recession that has left millions of his compatriots struggling to feed daily. Mr. Melaye, a first-time senator who represents Kogi Central, owns a fleet of luxury and antiquated cars worth billions of Naira. He has at least 28 of the expensive cars parked at his upmarket residence in Maitama Abuja, according to the news website, Sahara Reporters. In February, Mr. Melaye, who once led a nongovernmental organisation campaigning against corruption, posed in a 2015 Slingshot estimated to cost about N4.78 Million. In September, he arrived at Senate function at the Sheraton Hotel, Abuja, in a Mercedes Benz 190 (1958 Model) and a Hindustan Ambassador, used for his security aides.   In October 2015, the Port Harcourt International Airport was listed as the worst airport in the world. The Travel Website - Sleeping In Airports, responsible for the list wrote: "Respondents complained about unpleasant and unhelpful staff, alleged corruption, a severe lack of seating, broken air-conditioning and the fact that the arrivals hall was inside a tent. The good news is that some areas of the terminal have been recently renovated, meaning you can expect actual walls, floors and windows. Though it is a far cry from reasonable, improvements are being made."  The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria immediately rejected the ranking and said the organization that carried out the rating exercise failed to take into consideration the fact that the airport is presently undergoing some re-modelling which will invariably cause passengers and operators in the airport some discomfort. Asset Declaration: CCT dismisses Saraki’s motion asking judge to disqualify himself

Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Danladi Umar, has dismissed an application by Senate President Bukola Saraki asking him, to disqualify himself from hearing his trial on false asset declaration. Saraki is standing trial for alleged false declaration of assets while he was serving as governor of Kwara state. Delivering judgement on Saraki's application today, the Chairman of the Tribunal said he would have disqualified himself if the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which established and binds the tribunal, had made provisions for such an instance where the CCT Chairman can unilaterally disqualify himself from a case. He added that for the President to remove the Chairman or a member of the Tribunal, there must a written address from the president to the national assembly and a two-third consent from both chambers of the legislative. He ruled that the allegation by Saraki that he is bias in his case is a "mere conjecture of the media" ...

New manager of Chelsea Antonio Conte has heaped praise on Nigerian winger Victor Moses saying the Super Eagles player understands his type of football. Moses, has had a re-awakening of his Chelsea career this season, featuring in most of the games and played well in a wing back role in Chelsea's 2-0 win over Hull. Conte praised the lad saying:  ''It was a great performance from Victor Moses. Your name isn't important but you have to play my idea of football' Conte said to journalists.  'For me, Moses played an incredible  game in a defensive situation and offensive situation It's fantastic!'  'He's working very hard and that's why he deserved to play. He showed me that my choice was right If Moses and Pedro can play in this way, it's fantastic. To have wingers able to do this role (wing-back) is a great option.''
